They brush away concerns that elements of Turkey’s deep state — which includes the intelligence service, police, military and criminal elements, and has links to Erdogan’s ultranationalist coalition partner — could move to prop up an ailing president. “When it is clear the ship is sinking, everyone will jump off,” says a senior member of one opposition party. “I don’t just mean in the AKP, I also mean in the bureaucracy, the military. Do you think the military will stand up for him if he’s going down? They will not.”
