Gonul Tol: Turkey’s ‘Gandhi’ sets his sights on strongman Erdoğan

An excellent background piece on the main opposition leader.  Also, Tol makes a very good point:  Does Turkey want another charismatic leader, who destroyed social peace and all the foundations of the democracy in return for zero economic gain for the average voter?  Is’t it time to go with some who looks and acts like your loving grandpa?

Over his years in office, Erdoğan has centralized power in his own hands and built a personalist autocracy and encouraging a cult of personality. Kılıçdaroğlu wants to diffuse power and resuscitate Turkish democracy — a task the country’s opposition coalition officially gave him this week, naming him their presidential candidate in what many believe will be make-or-break elections in May.
